Gamescom in Cologne

It’s finally time again. After Gamescom in Cologne could only take place digitally in 2020 and 2021, the world’s largest trade fair for online gaming is back in Cologne this year. This means that for a few days in August, the center of the gaming world will once again be in Cologne. As is so often the case, the Cologne trade fair center will once again host one of the world’s leading international trade fairs. Gamescom is the world’s largest trade fair for computer, console, video and online games – both in terms of visitor numbers and exhibition space.

While the gaming industry has posted impressive figures despite the pandemic and shortage of raw materials, all relevant gaming trade fairs and events have had to be canceled since the start of the pandemic. However, one thing is certain: the infamous trade fair is to take place again as a public trade fair at the Cologne Exhibition Center for the first time since 2019, and exhibitors and fans are excited.

What is Gamescom and why is it so important?

With the name “Gamescom” and the venue Cologne Trade Fair, the trade fair has been held annually since 2009. Launched in 2002 as a games convention in Leipzig, the event took its first step. Modified and relocated to the trade fair city of Cologne, the concept has proven its worth and is now known as “Gamescom”, one of the trade fairs that has become indispensable. Gamescom in Cologne is the world’s largest trade fair for online and computer gaming. But Gamescom also performs impressively with other sectors: it is the trade fair in Cologne with the most visitors and reliably ensures a lot of tourism in the beautiful city on the Rhine.

Gamescom is divided into areas for private visitors and trade visitors. In total, it offers space for up to 400,000 visitors. Trade visitors can visit all areas, while private visitors do not have access to the B2B area.

The highlights of Gamescom primarily include well-known games or technological innovations that can be tried out and tested here in Cologne before they are released as part of the gaming trade fair. Private visitors are prepared to queue for hours to do so. For fans, but also for professional gamers and cosplayers, Gamescom is the most important event of the year and, quite rightly, an unmistakable experience.

Location, dates and venue of Gamescom 2022

This year’s Gamescom will take place from 24.08.22 to 28.08.22 at Koelnmesse GmbH. The exact address of the exhibition center is Messeplatz 1 in 50679 Cologne and can be reached via various public transport stations. The first day is traditionally reserved for trade visitors and the press. For private visitors, the starting signal is the 25th Aufust, or the Opening Night on 23.08., which can be followed via livestream.

The opening hours for trade visitors in the B2B area, which is open from Wednesday to Friday, are

  • Wednesday: 09:00 to 19:00
  • Thursday: 09:00 to 20:00
  • Friday: 09:00 to 20:00

For private visitors, however, the following opening hours apply:

  • Wednesday: 09:00 to 19:00
  • Thursday: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • Friday: 09:00 to 20:00
  • Saturday: 09:00 to 20:00
  • Sunday: 09:00 to 20:00

Tickets for Gamescom have been available since 08.06.22. The normal prices for Thursday and Friday are €25 without a discount and €18 with a student discount or age reduction (over 65). Tickets for Friday and Saturday cost €30.50 for an undiscounted price and €23 for a reduced price. There is also a family offer for €40 (Thursday, Friday) and €50 (Saturday, Sunday). As a further alternative, there are so-called evening tickets for €9, which give you access to Gamescom from 4 pm. You can also buy a “Legendary Player Box” in advance, which contains merchandise products, surprise items and show ticket codes and starts at €60.

What you can expect at this year’s Gamescom 2022 in Cologne

Over 250 exhibitors have already confirmed their participation in Gamescom 2022. These exhibitors include: Aerosoft, Assemble Entertainment, Level Infinite (Tencent Games), THQ Nordic, Bandai Namco Entertainment, HandyGames, Kalypso Media, Koch Media and SEGA.

Both Nintendo and Sony will not be exhibiting at Gamescom this year. This means that Gamescom is missing two of the biggest console manufacturers and major exhibitors this year. Other exhibitors not represented this year are: 2K, Activision Blizzard (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Diablo 4), Private Division (OlliOlli World, Rollerdrome, Hades), Rockstar Games (Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption), Alternate, Wargaming (World of Tanks, World of Warplanes, Nintendo (Switch, Splatoon 3), Sony Interactive (PlayStation 5, PSVR2, God of War Ragnarök).

The pandemic is not the only reason for the unfortunately still very numerous cancellations, but also the costs. Logistics, materials and personnel play a key role in financing an exhibition stand. Gamescom may be celebrating a comeback, but Corona is not yet history. For this reason, strict regulations still apply at the trade fair. There are no longer any corona restrictions, but prevention is still taken seriously during the trade fair. Admission and visitor guidance are said to have been optimized, for example through digital queue management and wider aisles. In addition, disinfectant dispensers will be available and regular cleaning will be carried out.
