Model casting: From outfit to make-up – how do you increase your catwalk chances?

A successful model casting can make the difference between a promising career on the catwalk and missed opportunities. But while talent is undoubtedly important, it’s often the subtle nuances of outfit, make-up and presentation that decide who gets that coveted spot on the catwalk.

In this article, we explore the strategic steps and insider tips to help aspiring models maximize their chances at castings.

What is a model casting?

A model casting is a crucial phase in the world of fashion where aspiring models have the opportunity to present themselves to potential clients and agencies. It is the moment when talent, charisma and presentation skills are put to the test in order to get the coveted places on the catwalk or for photo shoots. But a successful casting requires more than just good looks – it’s about the perfect combination of expression, style and professionalism that leaves a lasting impression.

The right outfit choice for the upcoming casting

A basic rule that is as simple as it is universal: less is more! Many ambitious models make the mistake of bringing their own penchant for fashion and exciting styles to the casting – but that’s not the model’s job. They should be nothing more than a white, discreet canvas at the casting. This gives the decision-makers present at the casting, the creative directors and fashion designers, a precise idea of how the model can be used for their own collection or campaign.

Unless there is a very precise instruction to the contrary, you are always well advised to wear basics at the casting, both on location and at online castings: simple, single-colored tops, preferably in white, are always a good choice. They should not be skin-tight, but tight enough to give the decision-makers present an exact idea of your silhouette and figure.

While light-colored tops and T-shirts are a very good choice for castings, the trousers can be darker. Plain black trousers are a timeless evergreen that are never out of place. The same applies to simple, slim-fit blue jeans. But both should be neat: So regardless of what’s considered trendy among young girls and women in the inner city, you shouldn’t show up at fashion castings with tattered or artificially used-look jeans and pants. Flared pants are also not a good choice: body-hugging looks are always better.

Simple top, simple trousers, both body-hugging: this also includes high heels. They not only make ambitious models look taller, but also cleverly show off their legs. The customer must also be sure that their models can actually walk in high heels – because this is essential for catwalk castings in particular. However, the shoes should neither be exotic nor have airy high heels. A medium heel is perfectly adequate. Of course, the heels should also be well-groomed and clean.

What do you need to avoid with the casting look?

The basics are already taken care of: in many cases, however, the client also wants to see a little more of their future models. That’s why short shorts and a bikini should also be part of the luggage. The same applies here as for the standard outfit: more discreet is always better. The client wants to be able to concentrate on the model herself and not be distracted by extravagant, exotic or eye-catching items of clothing.

Make-up is another common stumbling block for inexperienced model applicants. Unsurprisingly, as before, “less is more” once again applies here. Ideally, models should not wear any make-up at all at the casting, as fashion designers and creative directors are best able to assess a model’s suitability if they know what she looks like naturally. Make-up can change the facial contours and definition too much.

If you don’t like going out without make-up yourself, you will have to get used to it as a model. A little practice is helpful here: even without make-up, models should have a positive charisma and a confident appearance. This is not possible if you feel ashamed or insecure because of your own natural look. Practice makes perfect – or rather the model. The best way to do this is to go out without make-up more often in your free time. Then self-confidence will come almost automatically over time.

What do you do with your hair – and how do you leave a positive, lasting impression?

Hair should be washed and blow-dried on the day of the casting. It is usually worn loose, as this gives the client a better impression of the natural hairstyle. Prospective models should not forget a hair band. However, this is only put on when the client wants the hair “out of the way”.

Another thing not to forget is to have fun with the whole thing. Experienced casting directors can tell when someone is passionate and enjoying themselves – and communicates this with a positive charisma. Even if a casting is an important thing: No one should appear dogged or uptight.
